GREENLINING REALTY AND THE IMPACT IN SOUTH CHICAGO

GREENLINING REALTY AND THE IMPACT IN CHICAGO

We had the opportunity to talk with Mr. Lamell McMorris, founder of Greenlining Realty USA. He is a national real estate developer with a strong focus on creating mixed-use developments that have a large-scale economic impact in an area.

Together with his team Mr. McMorris is transforming the neighbourhood of Woodland. His project Woodlawn point consists of 9 homes of which 7 new constructed single-family and multi-family and 2 renovated single-family and multi-family homes.

Woodlawn Pointe is part of the Opportunity Zone. A program created in December 22, 2017 that gives investors incentive to invest in low-income communities by offering tax incentives for qualified investors.

THE MEANING OF REDLINING

Redlining is the systematic denial and discriminatory practice of denying or limiting various services by federal government agencies, local governments, and/or the private sector. Services such as mortgage and loans to communities of colour are either rejected or have a selective increase in price. This makes it almost impossible for those who want to invest in and strengthen their local community and neighbourhoods.

GREENLINING REALTY THE COUNTER MOVEMENT

Greenlining Realty was founded to create a counter-movement against redlining and is dedicated to reversing the historical, damaging effects of discrimination in lending. As a premier comprehensive urban property redevelopment firm, its mission is to create pathways to capital essential for neighbourhood investment, redevelopment, housing rehabilitation, and home improvement.

Two weeks ago, I had the opportunity to present ACS: FAMILIA to Samuel Assefa (Director, Office of Planning & Community Development at City of Seattle), and see if ACS: FAMILIA can help the city of Seattle realise its ambition to create urban villages. I am looking forward to continuing our explorations together.
